Emma Skala

Psychodynamic Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist

I recognise that every client is unique and I have developed a way of working that respects this, drawing on a range of approaches to meet these needs. Whether I am working with children, young people, families or adults, we will work together to identify the key aims for the therapy. I am curious about the relationships that clients have with the people around them, both now and in the past. I offer work on a one to one basis, with other family members and parent work.

I bring creativity into my work and offer the use of art materials and creative play to all clients as alternative ways of enhancing communication in therapeutic work.  I am also interested in the stories that we tell about ourselves and how this can impact on a client's experience of themselves.

I am aware that we are all impacted by the context which we live in and these external factors impact our day to day life as well as our internal world. This means I try to understand and incorporate cultural and societal influences and consider how these impact on a person and their thinking.

My work over the past 10 years has been in the public sector, in schools, children’s centres and other settings in inner London and for a local authority in the home counties.  I have worked 1;1 with children, adolescents, young adults, parents, individual adults, and supported foster carers and school staff.

In addition to my clinical work, I am an Associate Lecturer at the University of London and teach graduates on a number of courses at Masters and Graduate Certificate level in psychodynamic psychotherapy training.

My previous career as a designer in the arts began my journey towards developing different ways of seeing, observing and thinking about the behaviours of individuals and groups, which I have built on in this work.
