Emma Skala

Psychodynamic Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist

My aim is to offer a warm therapeutic approach that fosters confidence and builds trust so that the confusion of emotions you may be experiencing can be explored safely. My training was based in psychodynamic ideas and incorporates family systemic thinking and so I bring a curiosity about your early relationships to the therapy. We may look at how past events have shaped how you see yourself and together, we can begin to understand the context of the stories you tell yourself and where those might have come from. This, in turn, might open up space to think differently and empower a move towards change.

Therapy usually involves some talking and is client led, however it is possible to use art materials and play to enhance communication and think together if this feels comfortable. This can be helpful with younger clients. I have found that there is no one way of working and I try to tune in to each client’s uniqueness, and work alongside them and their specific needs.

I work with children, adolescents, young adults and adults. I have over 14 years of experience of working with many issues that range from anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and bereavement to the more complex presentations such as OCD, ADHD and neurodiversity. I also work closely with parents and family members as a holistic way to support a client’s journey.

My work has spanned the public sector, schools (both state and private), and other settings in both inner and outer London. I also teach at Birkbeck University on their therapy training courses. My previous career was in the arts, which began my journey towards developing different ways of seeing, observing and thinking about the behaviours of individuals and groups, which I now I incorporate into therapeutic change.
